Casino launches its own gluten-free food range

After being the first retailer to sign a charter of commitments to nutritional improvement, backed by the Ministry of Health, Casino is bolstering its nutrition-orientated undertaking by launching a range of gluten-free products in partnership with the French Gluten Intolerance Association (AFDIAG).
In France, specialists estimate that there are 600,000 gluten intolerance sufferers, also called celiacs, yet only 15% are currently diagnosed, figures showing that this is one of the most common intolerances.
Marketed since 1st May 2010 throughout the Casino network (hypermarkets and supermarkets) on the health foods shelves, this Casino gluten-free range meets with the requirements of celiacs offering them suitable products that are both enjoyable and practical. The Casino Gluten-free range is proposed at a price of 20% less than the other National Gluten-Free Brands on the market meaning sufferers can enjoy a gourmet and varied diet and have access to products on a daily basis. The range is currently made up of 7 products with plans to be extended in 2011 to cover all meal times.

Celiac sufferers have to follow a special diet avoiding any foods containing gluten. Shopping becomes a chore when you have to check the composition of every product before buying it. The Casino gluten-free range has been specially designed to facilitate the lives of those suffering from a gluten intolerance by offering them safe products. A quality control is guaranteed throughout production without overlooking taste as the organoleptic* quality of the products is also controlled.

The Casino gluten-free guarantees
• The Casino gluten-free products have special production lines and a control to check the product is free of gluten is performed on the finished product
• All the products of the range are guaranteed "gluten-free" i.e. a content of less than 20 ppm representing the tolerance threshold of an allergic person**
• All the Casino gluten-free products are endorsed by the AFDIAG,
French Gluten Intolerance Association and are identified
by the "crossed out ear of wheat" logo on each packaging
• A selection and control are performed on all the raw materials making up the products
• All the products are in compliance with the Casino nutrition requirements and are guaranteed free of trans fats, partially hydrogenated oils or palm oil.
Over half of the products of the range are reimbursed by the French Social Security
For those diagnosed as having a gluten intolerance, four categories of gluten-free products are reimbursed by the French Social Security: flour, bread, pasta and biscuits. Therefore, the gluten-free Casino pasta and cripsbreads are reimbursed as per the terms laid down by the French Social Security.
