The Casino Carbon Index: a green label for products

In addition to expanding our selection of "responsible" products, our goal has been to provide consumers with clear information regarding the environmental impact of the products they use each day, so they can make fully informed decisions as they shop.
That is the idea behind our new environmental label, the Casino Carbon Index, which debuted in June 2008 on some 100 products.

Indice Carbone Casino

This index, the result of an initiative launched in 2006 to assess the environmental impact of our products and carried out with help from specially trained consultants and ADEME, indicates the quantity of greenhouse gas generated over the course of each product’s lifecycle, from production to retail sale. Expressed in grams of CO2 equivalent per 100 grams of end product, it provides consumers with a tool for comparing different products.

In June 2008, we hosted 500 suppliers of Casino-brand products at a forum designed to introduce them to this environmental labelling system. We provide suppliers with free software they can use to calculate the portion of the Carbon Index that is attributable to their production decisions and purchases of raw materials.
Since the Carbon Index was introduced in June 2008, more than 20 metric tons of CO2 equivalent have been saved on products carrying the new information.

This initiative—the first of its kind in the retail sector—has garnered the Group numerous awards. Following the honorary Marianne d’Or award bestowed on the project by France’s local authorities in late 2007, in December 2008 the Group was awarded a Business and Environment Prize in the area of "Sustainable Development Initiatives" by France’s Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and Town and Country Planning.
